The client envisioned a café with an airy yet vintage atmosphere, a space that balanced openness with intimacy. Their aspiration was to create a destination that invited natural light, showcased greenery, and embodied artisanal craft through carefully chosen details. The café was to feel timeless yet functional, drawing inspiration from both European street cafés and modern design sensibilities.
The primary challenge lay in managing natural light. With the café located against a backdrop of tall residential façades, direct sunlight was inconsistent and often obstructed. At the same time, an overabundance of glazing risked glare and thermal discomfort, potentially disrupting the cozy, vintage ambience the client desired. Integrating vintage character while keeping the café contemporary and fresh was another delicate balance to achieve.
To solve the light challenge, the skylight was precisely positioned after calculating the shadow patterns cast by the surrounding buildings. This ensured that the roof opening would capture optimal daylight without introducing harsh glare. The skylight was paired with cascading ivy planters and perforated openings, which filtered and diffused sunlight into a soft, ambient glow. This design move transformed potential excess into a controlled play of light and shadow, reinforcing the airy, garden-like quality of the café.
For the windows, half curtains were introduced—a charming and practical vintage gesture. These not only moderated incoming light but also contributed to the café’s cozy, domestic feel.
The interiors emphasized craft through tactile, natural materials. A green marble counter anchored the space as a focal point, while hanging greenery under the pitched roof added depth and freshness. Vintage accents—such as the antique bicycle, rustic barrels, and bread displays—were layered thoughtfully with modern furniture, ensuring both character and comfort.
The final design is a harmonious fusion of light, greenery, and nostalgia. By carefully orchestrating daylight through skylight positioning, filtered plantings, and charming half curtains, the café achieves the client’s vision of an airy yet vintage haven. It feels open, welcoming, and timeless—an artisanal retreat where design solves functional challenges while elevating everyday experience.
